What is STEM?

Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, STEM is an acronym used to describe this set of very important subjects. STEM subjects can be applied to a huge number of topics and take people down a wide range of interesting career paths.

All young people should have STEM knowledge and skills in order to be an informed citizen in our modern society which embraces technology and science in almost every walk of life.

STEM teaching allows young people to see how traditional academic subjects, such as Science or Mathematics relate to today’s technological wonders, from smartphones to satellites.

What is the skills gap?

Knowledge of STEM subjects is an essential component of the high-tech economy here in the UK. A STEM qualified workforce is crucial for its continued success.

In 2013, a Confederation of British Industry (CBI) survey of almost 300 UK employers reported 39% as having difficulties recruiting STEM skilled staff and there is wide recognition from all levels of government and across industry that more students need to be choosing STEM careers for the UK to compete globally in the future.

A recent report by the Royal Academy of Engineering stated that the UK will need one hundred thousand new graduates with STEM degrees every year by 2020 just to maintain current staffing levels!

What is STEMnet?

STEMNET is the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network and its goal is to create opportunities to inspire young people in STEM. Click here to open the STEMNET website in a new window.

STEMNET works with thousands of schools, colleges and STEM employers, to enable young people of all backgrounds and abilities to meet inspiring role models, understand real world applications of STEM subjects and experience hands-on STEM activities that motivate, inspire and bring learning and career opportunities to life.

STEMNET is responsible for the over 27,000 STEM Ambassadors throughout the UK, who volunteer their time to promote STEM subjects to young people, using a host of imaginative, engaging and interesting approaches.

Here at Critical Paths, we are all STEM Ambassadors and would love to pass on our STEM knowledge and experiences to the next generation, and maybe have some fun along the way!
